Death Note

a brilliant high school student decides to kill criminals with the help of a supernatural notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it

Type of Pilot: Fantasy

Similar Shows: Can't think of any, off hand. Maybe The Crow. In a way. But not really.

The Inner Light: The human whose name is written in this note shall die.

Strengths: It's dark, clever stuff, with two compelling characters.

Weaknesses: I'm not about to pick any flaws here. I loved it.

Impressive Characters: The opening episode is devoted to two characters: the kid who finds the Death Note notebook and the Death God who lost the notebook in the first place and shows up to see what is going on. These two are perfectly drawn (pardon the pun). Their motivations are fascinating, and their eventual meeting is electic. Aside from the big picture (another pun) of what is going on, there are a few small details thrown in. Character stuff. Marvellous.

Impressive Actors: Mamoru Miyano does a great job as the hero. Conveying the ennui of the character perfectly.

Continuity: Not sure yet.

Rewatchability: 100% rewatchable.

Other Info: Aired from October 3rd, 2006, to June 26th, 2007.

Three Things I Really Like About This Pilot:

The concept is fresh and original.

The two main characters are fascinating and they play off one another very well.

The concept is dark. And Deep.

Miscellaneous Comments:

I dived into this with no expectations. And I was completely and utterly entertained. It's like nothing else I've seen.

GRADE: A

Ignoring Friday Night Lights renders the Emmy's meaningless.
