Cavemen pilot review

Cavemen

three modern cavemen live in a world that can sometimes be racially intolerant

Type of Pilot: comedy(?)

Similar Shows: Can't think of any.

The Inner Light: It sucks being different

Strengths: Great concept, great cast

Weaknesses: No laughs

Impressive Characters: Joel is our hero, and he's a likable enough guy. He's got a great girlfriend, and all he really wants to do is be accepted by her dad. Nick is the cynical one (and the only character to get any laughs) and he's sure everyone sees them as stereotypical cavement. Jamie is the uncomplicated one.

Impressive Actors: Bill English as Joel, Nick Kroll as Nick

Rewatchability: I loved the concept of this. It's brilliant, it' clever, it works. And if the darn thing was funny, I'd be keen to watch the pilot again.

Other Info: The concept comes from the world of commercials, where the guys were played by different actors.

Three Things I Really Like About This Pilot:

It's a great idea for a show. Three cavemen, in modern times, and use their story to look at race issues. Brilliant. But, as a comedy?

I really liked that the three central characters are so easy to distinguish. I thought, before I saw this, that maybe it would just be three hairy guys and you'd have a hard time telling who was who. In fact, since the characters are drawn with broad stokes it's easy to tell them apart. There's the nice one, glass half-full view of the world, always hopes for the best. There's the cynical one, glass half-empty view of the world, always telling the other two what is really going on. And there's the dumb one. The standard sit-com moron. The 'Joey'.

I really liked the hero's girlfriend's friend, who was looking for something "wild" with one of the cavemen. She was cute and kinda funny.

Three Things One Thing I Really Don't Like About This Pilot:

It's not funny. There were no laughs in the pilot. In fact, it felt more like a drama in lots of ways.

Miscellaneous Comments:

Needs to be funny to work.

GRADE:
A-

Did you watch the pilot that ABC is not airing as the first episode? I hear the revised pilot is much better ... and quick comment, if you didn't care much for it, why did you still give it an A-? seems like C material?

Yeah, I saw the version that will not be aired. I can't wait for the aired version. I wonder if it will be funny?

I'm curious as to what makes you think I didn't care for it? I said it had "great concept, great cast", I described it as "brilliant" & "clever" and used the phrase "it works." I said, in the review, that I liked it, several times, and I graded it as "A-"

Why would you think I didn't care for it?

Yeah, that was great. There were a few really great lines in the show alright. I still think it needs more, but - having said that - I really, really like this show and I'll be sticking with it.

Ignoring Friday Night Lights renders the Emmy's meaningless.
