Damages

new employee at a law firm finds herself in deep (and way over her head)

Type of Pilot: Drama.

Similar Shows: Devil Wears Prada (movie), LA Law, The Practice

The Inner Light: Trust No One.

Strengths: Glenn Close. Lots of twists and turns. A story told in flashback from an intriguing future.

Weaknesses: Will viewers stick with another serialised drama?

Impressive Characters: Patty Hewes (as played by Glenn Close) is a powerhouse. She's clever and manipulative.

Impressive Actors: Glenn Close is superb. Rose Byrne is almost as good. Between them they carry the show, with ample support from Ted Danson (as the supposed baddie), Zeljko Ivanek (as his lawyer) and Tate Donovan (as Glenn's right hand man).

Less-Than-Impressive Characters: David Connor, the boyfriend, is kinda bland.

Less-Than-Impressive Actors: Noah Bean, the boyfriend, is kinda bland.

Continuity: Lots. This is a serialised show. We're going to watching one case all season, as Hewes takes on a class-action suit representing 5,000 employees against the tycoon who stole their pensions.

Rewatchability: A certain amount. Having finished the pilot, and knowing what I now know, I'd quite like to go back and watch the whole thing again.

Three Things I Really Like About This Pilot:

Glenn Close.

The fact what everything we are seeing is a flashback and, from appearence, things have not turned out all too well for our heroine.

Rose Byrne makes Ellen a likable heroine.

Three Things I Really Don't Like About This Pilot:

Not impressed with Ellen's boyfriend. You are supposed to feel that she is giving something up to follow a career in law, but you don't get that with this guy. At least I don't.

His sister is a bit bland, too.

Nothing else. It's a strong pilot, great opening episode.

Miscellaneous Comments:

Dark powerful first episode, count me in!

GRADE: A

I completely agree... Damages is an excellent, and so far my favorite, show. The acting (Glose is flawless!), writing, production... everything is perfect.

Ignoring Friday Night Lights renders the Emmy's meaningless.
